Franka Frei

Franka Frei, born in Cologne in 1995 and raised in Salzburg, Austria, is a journalist, author and activist with a focus on reproductive rights and health. Since completing her bachelor's degree in Applied Media and her bachelor's thesis suddenly going viral, she has been a menstrual activist in the media - sometimes accompanied by a human-sized tampon costume - and has been campaigning for sexual health and reproductive rights. In 2019, she published the popular science non-fiction book "Periode ist politisch. A manifesto against the menstruation taboo" (published by Heyne Hardcore in 2020). Her debut novel "Krötensex" followed in March 2021 with Heyne. 2023 the popular science non-fiction book "Overdue. Warum Verhütung auch Männersache ist" by Goldmann Verlag. For her research, Franka Frei networked worldwide with activists, researchers and politicians - in 2022 she advised the German government on the creation of guidelines for a new feminist foreign policy.

In addition to her work as a lecturer in Germany and abroad, Franka Frei works as a freelance journalist. Her contributions appear on Deutschlandfunk Kultur, Funk, WDR Cosmo, 1 Live and Neues Deutschland, among others, and further audio, print and video interviews with Franka Frei can be found in media such as Deutschlandfunk and Tagesspiegel & Zeit Online. Since 2021, Franka Frei has hosted the podcast "Tabufrei" in cooperation with Essity and, together with the Network for Shared Contraception, advocates for contraceptive justice.
