Act United – Stay Independent! The basics of the music industry for musicians and their partners
Session
April 17, 12:00–13:00
Herbrand's - Stage 5
This event is part of the VUT Indie Days and the New Talent program.
Listeners, musicians, labels, publishers, radio stations, streaming services, event organizers, and many more—they are all part of the music industry. But how do these players interact, who takes on which role, and where do opportunities, dependencies, and conflicts arise? In this workshop, Christopher Annen and Frank Kühl provide a clear overview of the central structures of the industry. They explain how the most important players work, what challenges exist, and how their interests are connected. A special focus is placed on music associations: What tasks do they take on, how do they bundle interests, and why are they indispensable for many?
Using practical examples from association work for artists, labels, and publishers, the speakers will show how associations provide political, economic, and practical support. They will share their experiences, answer questions, and invite participants to exchange ideas. The workshop is aimed at artists, labels, publishers, and newcomers who are looking for guidance, want to avoid costly mistakes, and want to make their work more sustainable and successful.
