Future of city magazine – Are we only talking about ice cream parlors?

Are city magazines next in the media graveyard alongside Spex, Groove, Intro & Co? Somewhere between culture tips, reviews and the twelve best ice cream parlors. How will people in big cities like Cologne or Berlin be reached in 2021? Website, app, newsletter or social media? Is it even possible to monetize this content? And is a city magazine still needed at all? Many questions, one talk, we serve up your answers.

Speaker*innen: Lea Bohlmann, Franzi Simon, Sophie Döring, Christian Werthschulte

This Talk will be held in German and presented by ASK HELMUT & Rausgegangen.

Thinking utopias: What could the music industry of the future look like?
Thu 22 04, 12:30

Thinking utopias: What could the music industry of the future look like?

In keeping with Earth Day, we want to think about the future with you: What could the perfect music industry look like in 15 years? How can it be sustainable, fair and creative? In small groups we will guide you step by step in thinking about utopia, so you don't need any prior knowledge – just a little imagination.

We have prepared the following topics:
Mobility // Digital // Merch // Consumption // Positioning // Events // Mission

Finally, we'll introduce you to a few good practices – so you can start getting closer to your vision right away.

This Breakout Session will be held in German and is presented by Music Declares Emergency Germany. Music Declares Emergency is a community of artists, organizations, and music industry players working to protect the planet and as part of the climate movement to raise awareness about the climate emergency and aim for immediate action.

This Breakout Session will not be streamed and is only accessible with registration (the number of seats is limited). To register, you need an account on our Convention platform. Scott Cohen & Antònia Folguera: Staying innovative in times of uncertainty (EN)

Despite massive crises, the music industry has always managed to adapt and survive - despite taking massive blows in what was once its most profitable sector. The music industry is very dynamic and context-dependent, constantly changing the needs and constraints of its stakeholders. Yet, if anything, its actual value has been enhanced, because it has never been as ubiquitous as it is today. And it doesn't take much imagination to envision the important contribution music will make in the - hopefully soon to come! - in the post-pandemic era in culture, in technology, and in general in our togetherness. Even if it is naïve to expect a return to "business as usual," we are all eagerly awaiting the moment when people try to reclaim their everyday lives. In this case, the question is which innovations will simply fade away while others prove they are here to stay? We want to discuss what these might be with one of the most innovative minds in the music industry. To do so, we've come up with something special: Scott Cohen and Antònia Folguera - or more precisely, their avatars - meet for this conversation in the VR app RAUM: an immersive virtual space where people come together to collaborate and create, interacting with each other as if they were sharing the same space. 100% physical distance and 0% social distance! We stream directly from the app, so all viewers of the c/o pop xoxo livestream can be there. Sounds like the future? Seeing is believing!

Speakers: Scott Cohen, Antònia Folguera

This Keynote Interview will be conducted in English in cooperation with RAUM.

Which way to the exit, please? The Use of Technology in Pandemic Response

Recently, it was announced what had been clear for a long time: music festivals will not be able to take place as usual this summer either, and the cultural and event industry is down in other respects as well; the "first-in, last-out" scenario that started in March 2020 is unfortunately a bitter reality and will remain so for a while. There has been and continues to be a lot of talk about policy mistakes and failures in terms of strategies and scenarios for the resumption of cultural operations - but is everyone talking about the same thing here. The fact that a comprehensive strategy for combating the pandemic and its consequences would absolutely have to include the use of new technologies - keyword: digital contact tracing - has been a recurring theme of late.

Professor Christiane Woopen, Chairwoman of the European Ethics Council and member of the NRW Corona Expert Council, recently put it in very drastic terms: "I think (...) we must introduce a new technology if it is a helpful building block in the fight against the pandemic and makes it possible to restrict the freedoms and rights of citizens as little and as briefly as possible," she said in an interview with the Kölner Staatsanzeiger. And further: "This is not even a question of weighing. It's an ethical imperative."

So where are we on this issue right now? What has the Corona-Warnapp possibly been missing, what improvements will its forthcoming new feature bring? Should additional tools such as the Luca or Recover app come into play, and what conditions would need to be in place to make that happen? Why is policymakers having such a hard time getting these tools to work faster? What - possibly systemic - obstacles stand in our way?

Speakers: Prof. Dr. Andreas Meyer-Falcke, Dr. Nicole Grünewald, Jan Kus, Mankel Brinkmann

This Talk will be held in German and is organized in cooperation with the Media, Cultural and Creative Industries Sector Committee of the Cologne Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

On the way to a digital copyright society?

On the way to a digital copyright society?

No one knows for sure at the time of laying down this program what developments will still occur in the course of the (binding) national implementation of the European Copyright Directive on the home straight, what concerns will be expressed, what coalitions will be formed, and what mobilizations of which scenes and/or sub-publics will take place. What can be said for sure: It is complicated. Representatives and associations of creators, performers and their exploiters have fought for years to set the course, the concrete form of which they are now arguing about behind the scenes. Meanwhile, there are cautious signs of a rapprochement between representatives of creators and network policy. Taking music as a starting point, we take a look at the current discourse. What is being fought over, who is fighting with whom, what is the relationship between creators and digital society?

Speakers: Dr. Volker Grassmuck, Matthias Hornschuh
Moderator: Dr. Anke Schierholz

Phasing out of the cultural state of emergency – Strategies for music policy makers Part II (EN)

When talking about returning to a regular live music business mode, there is a broad agreement that there will be no specific Day 1, when live music will return to concert venues with maximal capacities. Rather, the return will likely be characterised by a phase of slow enhancement of capacities. Picking up the arguments and reflections on this topic held at ESNS 2021, the Music Cities Network renews the following questions with regards to the current developments. How can music policy makers facilitate the transition period between zero capacity, reduced capacity and full capacity? Which policies are needed to support the music ecosystem in its quest to return to the stages? Are there already strategies planned on a short/mid/long term level? To discuss these questions, the Music Cities Network invites selected music policy makers and music industry stakeholders to enable a joint discussion.

Speakers: Lex Davidson, Debra King, Jesper Mardahl, Enric Palau, Helen Sildna

This Talk will be held in English and presented by the Music Cities Network.

Independent together: Make your music heard – with the right DIY tools and a strong community

We believe that musical talent should be supported and strengthened – regardless of genre, style, identity or orientation. You believe that too, but you lack the right strategies and contacts to put your individual music career on a stable footing? In our MusicHub session we will give you a lot of ideas and suggestions on how to navigate through the music industry on your own or with the support of a community, the right partners and intuitive DIY tools. We support you in your independence: You can fully develop your creative potential, distribute your music independently release by release and keep full control over your rights.

Together we ask the right questions: How do you define success and your personal, realistic goals? What do you do alone and where do you need support? How do you find the right partners and a strong community to help you and your music grow? Who is your (desired) target group and how do you reach and convince them of your music? How do you develop your release strategy with the appropriate stories? How do you build your own musician brand?

Speakers: Ariane Petschow, Florian von Hoyer, Maïa Heidling

This Breakout Session is presented by MusicHub.

Club Study 2021: Initial presentation and discussion of key findings

Club Study 2021: Initial presentation and discussion of key findings

In October 2020, the Initiative Musik conducted the first nationwide survey on the situation of music venues in Germany as part of the Club Study. Thanks to a great willingness to participate among operators and the support of regional and national associations, meaningful data is now available for a comprehensive stocktaking. The club study will be published in spring 2021.

At the c/o pop Convention, we would like to present the key findings of the study. They give us a picture of the "normal state" before Corona and how things basically stand with music venues in Germany: how many are there and where? How are these establishments structured and what distinguishes them? In addition to the economic importance of music venues, their cultural and social contribution will be examined. Due to the current situation, the study will also look at the initial effects of the pandemic on venues and how far the road back to "normal" is. Finally, the club study provides information on where the greatest needs of music venues lie and how they and the musical and cultural diversity they create can be sustainably supported and promoted.

Following the presentation, we would like to broaden the perspective through four expert:inside talks. In them, guests from politics, the federal government and LiveKomm will explain what the results mean to them. What fundamental conclusions can be drawn about the work, structure and understanding of venues as cultural venues? What recommendations for action do the experts see from their respective perspectives and to whom should these be directed?

Speakers: Heiko Rühl, Caren Lay, Julia von Wild, Lisa Andersohn, Martin Eifler
Moderation: Ina Plodroch

The Initiative Musik is the central funding institution of the German government and the music industry for the German music industry. We strengthen the presentation and dissemination of music from Germany at home and abroad. Our programs and projects focus on supporting newcomers, musicians with a migration background, live music clubs and music companies, as well as the development of sustainable nationwide structures for rock, pop and jazz.

Save Our Sounds – Foundations to safeguard our club and live music culture

Germany sees itself as a nation of culture; as the land of poets and thinkers, in which culture plays a major role in social life. However, the understanding of culture – that is, the understanding of what is considered artistically valuable, worthy of protection and worthy of support – has not changed significantly since the end of the 19th century, and mostly encompasses what is commonly summarized as high culture. The areas of live music venues and live culture are not considered there, although they have developed into a formative component of cultural identity in Germany over the past decades. With the establishment of the Bundesstiftung LiveKultur, a nationwide foundation for securing spaces for music clubs and festivals – and thus for live music venues and live culture as an integral part of our cultural landscape – is being launched for the first time. In recent years, several foundations with a regional focus have already addressed this issue. With representatives of the Bundesstiftung LiveKultur, the Leipziger Clubstiftung, the Hamburger Clubstiftung, the Rockstiftung Hannover and the Tresor Berlin Foundation, we will discuss, among other things, whether foundations are the appropriate means to secure spaces for live and club culture in our cities and what role they can play in the change of our concept of culture.

Speakers: Terry Krug, Steffen Kache, Dimitri Hegemann, Karsten Schölermann
Moderator: Anna Blaich

This Talk will be held in German and is presented by LiveKomm – LiveMusikKommission e.V. and the Bundesstiftung LiveKultur.

TINCON: How to Twitch & Music

Anyone who still thinks "something to do with gaming?" when they hear "Twitch" should now open their ears and eyes wide. Because for the music industry, donations are buried here. In the US, live stream beat challenges, exclusive Q&As with your favorite artist, or studio room tours via Twitch are already commonplace as a source of income. In Germany, the whole thing is still in its infancy, but a few artists are already taking big steps: "Just chatting" with Bushido or Kool Savas, building beats with Ahzumjot or baking cinnamon buns with BLVTH, Twitch makes it possible. Gen Z is loving it.

Jan Müller, founding member and bassist of Tocotronic, makes one of the most interesting music podcasts in the country with "Reflektor". He takes the obvious – talking to other musicians as musicians – to another level. It's not just the selection of artists interviewed that shines, but above all the high level of respect, empathy and sensitivity that Jan Müller shows them. We also talk to him about how he came to make podcasts in the first place, and how he found a creative outlet as a rock musician condemned to do nothing.

AB Syndrom feat. Novaa und Fullax is presented by Deutschlandfunk Nova.

Support tour with Mine through Germany, Switzerland and Austria, with the joint song "Spiegelbild" at Böhmermann, concerts in Vietnam, Hong Kong and Manila - the tour life of the Berlin crypto-pop duo really picks up speed in 2019 and should actually roll with new tracks and first headliner tour through the FRG also directly further.

Sensibly then on March 27, 2020, however, not only the AB Syndromsche work "FRONTALCRASH" will be released, but also the debut "LOCKDOWN" dropped. Webcam release party and swimming with the livestream bring interpersonal context to the electronic sound. Thus the album experiences its premiere in an Ask Helmut-dringeblieben-online concert: generated in the moment, intimate yet intricate, autobiographical and in every respect without double bottoms. And quite as unbearable as first feared, the concert year doesn't turn out to be quite as unbearable as first feared: in addition to another online concert, performed together with artist and futurist Novaa, individual shows, such as at the Resonanzen Festival in Saarbrücken, can be realized in front of a real-life audience.

The concert with AB Syndrom takes place within the framework of the funding project " c/o pop 2021-musichubgermany" and is supported by the Initiative Musik gemeinnützige Projektgesellschaft GmbH with project funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.

Rola not only still has more air in her lungs than most of the local music scene, but has also learned the necessary lessons since she once knelt in front of the TV early in the morning to catch her first own video on Viva and record it with VHS tape. Her plan, then as now: to turn the German music scene upside down for once, to blow the ears free and open the mind, so that it is finally ready for real, uncompromising German R'n'B and Soul. And no one delivers that in such a refreshing, modern and real way as Rola.

With over 13 years of music career - meaning countless released songs, EPs and albums, tour supports for superstars like Rihanna and Cro, the first own solo tour and not to forget her own fashion label - Rola still comes to the realization with her single "Roli" this year: "Nobody knows me for real". 2020 is the end of it. Everyone has to know who Rola is. For real.

MELE

©Lebefrauu

"MELE is pop music in an alternative and different way. Even I come back to myself," said actor Klaus Kinski. God forbid! He said the bad word. But Mozart was also pop music. Not that MELE claims to be like Mozart. Neither MELE, nor her band, look particularly good in red velvet three-quarter pants.

Because pop is not just pop. And MELE is a shrewd observer of her environment. The lyrics are a cool look through
actually so friendly-trusting brown eyes at what happens to everyone: Wanting, not being able, resigning and then calling "now more than ever". Without pathos. But with a wink. "Music to kick through the table," Gandhi once said.

Marlene grew up in the Stuttgart area and moved to Osnabrück to study. There MELE is born as her alter ego and the first songs are written. Songs like "Monogamie" or "deine cousine" quickly make it clear: MELE does not does not mince words.

The concert is presented by Deutschlandfunk Nova.

The band Die Höchste Eisenbahn started more as a project. First consisting of the singer-songwriter Francesco Wilking, who writes short stories as well as musical poetry, and Moritz Krämer, the two musicians Max Schröder and Felix Weigt joined the project in 2012. Three albums later, you can already say that it is no longer a project, but a German pop band that is unparalleled in the German-language music landscape. The way they tell stories through their music, creating a very personal connection, is special. Their lyrics are often about longing, loss and world-weariness. But at the same time, they are always searching for their own self. Last year Die höchste Eisenbahn recorded a three-song EP with three live versions of the songs Louise, Zieh mich an and Überall.

Lie Ning is an artist from Berlin who gives this diffuse mixture of feelings a musical home. He comes from an environment that is just as constantly changing its face. With a voice of velvet surrounded by muffled piano hammers, shimmering electronic elements and the pulse of racing hearts, the 22-year-old creates a sometimes frightening, but mostly embracing intimacy.

Buoyed by somnambulistic confidence and relentless candor, the songs succeed in taking a deep look into the listener's soul while mirroring an artist's deepest inner self that couldn't be more thrilling.

Disarstar reads the riot act to parts of German rap with classic diss tracks, which, however, live from content criticism and not from personal resentment. The political awareness behind such lines has always distinguished Disarstar. But rarely has he brought it to the point like on Deutscher Oktober.

It's not about the big theses, the political guardrails or theoretical constructs. Instead, he reports in the style of a reporter from microcosms with which he is well acquainted. With Deutscher Oktober, Disarstar brings his astute political rap to the point in such a clear-sighted and precise way.

This showcase is presented by the Embassy of Ireland, Berlin.

The three Irish friends and bandmates Karen Cowley, Caoimhe Barry and Saoirse Diane have long debunked the myth that you can't choose your family. After all, the band was formed in a youthful world of self-discovery informed by their parents' '60s/'70s classic rock and singer-songwriter music collections and the '90s/'00s R'n'B of their childhood. Her name comes from the private language of secret code words of adolescent diaries and slumber parties - the lingo (lingo) of young dragons. What began in the idyllic seaside town of Bray led them on tours throughout Europe; including gigs with Hozier and James Vincent McMorrow. In Germany, they performed at the Reeperbahn Festival and the Parcous d'Amour stage at the Maifeld Derby, among other venues.

"We are three individuals whose lives are inextricably linked. We know each other inside and out and can't lie or fake anything in front of each other, so our lyrics are full of honesty."

MOLA

©Christin Büttner

The Bavarian Export Session with Mola is presented by VPBy.

The singer MOLA draws in her music the unadorned antithesis to a rosy world. She parties herself to death, drags you into her chaotic everyday life and renounces in her songs the usual romanticizing transfiguration of the merciless disorientation that catches up with you after the last cigarette on the way home. It is a musical and lyrical counter-design to the mere functionality that has become ubiquitous in recent years. Anti instead of bubble pop.

The classic hero is a perfect man: invulnerable, untouchable but above all unapproachable. MOLA presents in "Antiheld"
the opposite to all these attributes. She turns her inner self inside out and addresses what hurts her - undistorted, not exaggerated, approachable. But if you think that this theme world has to be presented in a sentimental and passive attitude, you are wrong. MOLA describes her own low blows with defiant self-confidence. "
Antiheld" is lived authenticity in fucking awesome aesthetics. Fuck heroes.

Cmern & Opsay

Cmern & Opsay are presented by the Institute for Pop Music of the Folkwang University of the Arts.

This is not future music - at most a musical parallel society. Wow, a word with five "L"s! Awesome.
About the music: The well-known poet Fred Schlakks sums it up best here when he describes the duo as "Dortmund's post-rap bohemians." A penchant for mindless sweeping rhymes that at times seem Schlageresque suggests a past (and future?) in the pubs of the Ruhr. And guess right! They have the best times behind them - and nothing more to lose.

ELIF

"A lot has happened," ELIF answers when asked about the time since her second album Doppelleben. She parted ways with her label and management, and on top of that, ended the toxic relationship she was in at the time. "The guy put me down and took away my self-esteem until there was nothing left of me," ELIF looks back. "When all you hear all the time is that you can't do anything and you're not worth anything, eventually you believe that."

It's a realization that, for ELIF, also puts her past discography in a different light. "I love my old albums, but I realized that I was always totally controlled in music. By finally finding myself and developing so much self-love, I've become much freer. I know who I am and appreciate myself - so much so that I don't care what anyone else says."

Also in terms of what ELIF actually sounds like. "I didn't even have the plan to sound different, I just started listening to different music. Just because I was once labeled a pop musician doesn't mean I have to make pop music my whole life. I'm not a service provider, I'm an artist. An artist who wants to grow."

Faux Real

Faux Real is part of the Faces of We are Europe 2021.

In the spring of 2018, Franco-American brothers Elliott and Virgile Arndt invoked the union of their inner gene genies and gave birth to Faux Real. As they conceived it, Faux Real combines elements of post-punk, glam rock, and contemporary R&B with a unique sense of humor, boy band tropes, and a forward-thinking approach to modern pop culture. Far before releasing any music, Faux Real began performing live, wooing half-confused, half-amused crowds one unconventional venue at a time. Building on a lifetime of inside jokes and shared mp3 libraries, the Arndt brothers created a signature show that simultaneously fetishizes, destroys, and re-invents their kinship through compelling choreography, playfully exploring the boundaries of duality, ridicule, and sexuality.

When we’re used to the hustle and bustle of everyday life, having all that noise taken away can leave a silence that’s just as loud. For South African-born, Berlin-based artist Alice Phoebe Lou, it was an opportunity to articulate her deepest thoughts and emotions into a new album, Glow.

After having to reschedule the recording a few times Alice found an analogue studio in Dresden where she was able to work on Glow with producer Dave Parry, her bassist Daklis, and her longtime collaborator Ziv Yamin on drums and keys. Parry also provided those blissful guitar lines that Lou says the songs were “begging for”. “I couldn’t have asked for more inspiring people to create the record with,” she says. She’d fallen in love with recording to tape by this point, and to bolster this warm yet gritty sound, Parry sourced decades-old mics and gear for the studio.

Maria Louceiro

Tuvaband is part of the Faces of We are Europe 2021 .

Over the last few years Norwegian artist Tuva Hellum Marschhäuser has proven herself a master of crafting songs that capture a special atmosphere in her sound, that paint a shapeshifting world of burning emotion, music that spellbinds.

Tuvaband’s debut album "Soft Drop" saw her write songs that were airy, ghostly and effortlessly cinematic, while its follow-up "I Entered The Void" (which earned a nomination for a Norwegian Grammy) pushed her sound into rougher, heavier atmospheric rock. But what unites all her music is its raw intensity – her songs have fires inside them, and listening is like being pulled into the flame. And now with her new album " Growing Pains & Pleasures", she’s set to take her songwriting to new levels and to adventurously push the boundaries of her musical world.

IUMA

©Frederike Wetzels

IUMA seems outwardly as a young artist and woman mostly self-confident, but in many situations she makes herself much stronger
than she really is. That's why she describes herself as "cool on the outside, a victim at heart". That being an adult in this world is not always easy and can quickly overwhelm you, knows IUMA too. Her lyrics, which she cleverly dresses in a contemporary garb of pop, trap and an avant-garde production, tell us about this. She shows us a self-chosen, contemporary image of women, which wavers between emancipation and conformity and manages to emancipate itself precisely because of this. It all adds up to a picture of forward-looking pop music: Innovation, content and emotion.

What is it like when home is no longer the place to stay? Or you no longer leave your own room because the pressure of the infinite possibilities of our time is too great? What happens when the compulsion for self-optimization only leads to isolation? - " Viertel vor Irgendwas" is the name of singer-songwriter Betterov's debut EP, on which he negotiates the big themes and questions of his generation in six extremely focused songs located between indie rock and post-punk. Betterov writes the songs for "Viertel vor Irgendwas" alone at home, and the 25-year-old's almost unabashed talent flashes in almost every line. For the recordings, musician friends come together in the studio to create a dense, uncompromising sound that sounds much more like a band than a singer-songwriter. Neue Deutsche Wahrheit

Julia Gaes

"No intoxication is ever enough." The duo Neue Deutsche Wahrheit oscillates between painful melancholy and intoxicating excess. In the midst of this flight from one extreme state to the next, Neue Deutsche Wahrheit invites you to a debauched feast for the eyes and ears. Pleasure becomes the credo, abundance the atitude. But beware: dance and reeling are not far apart.

The dramatically kitschy song lyrics go hand in hand with typical synth sounds of the eighties and challenge
to put aside everyday cynicism and surrender to pathos. Neue Deutsche Wahrheit exaggerates decadence and immoderateness to identity and offers the audience an exquisite banquet for the senses. Pompous costumes, dazzling make-up and dramatic poses define the duo's visual oeuvre. Clubs become theater stages, the concert becomes a performance.

Ava Vegas

©Saga Sigurðardóttir

Ava Vegas originally came to Berlin to study architecture at the University of the Arts. But today she prefers to design her buildings in her songs, where she finds a more appropriate place for her ideas. She was born in Göttingen, the city with the most Nobel Prize winners, then moved with her family to Goslar. However, she spent most of her childhood and adolescence in Ibiza, where she lived in a small house built there by her father, a professor of cultural studies.

Ava Vegas' music sounds like a convertible ride through a movie set. Perhaps the open-air ride leads through the imagined replica of Las Vegas, that city that already looks like the replica of all those longings that in life can only bounce off reality after all. But between dream and reality there exists a place, ambiguous and far, a phantasm, and this place has become music here. Thus, in the pieces of Ava Vegas, something glorious flies through the night, something luminous, visible in a glittering light reflecting in sequins, at the same time enveloped in an inescapable darkness.

What started off as a solo project of rapper Mile quickly became a band in summer 2020, when young singer Katrin Paucz joined the sessions at renowned producer Marco Kleebauers studio (he famously produced several award winning and chart-topping albums from bands like Bilderbuch, Oehl and his own band, Leyya). The three band members are meeting in the studio regularly ever since - the results are songs that are created on the spot and intuitively, the honest and personal lyrics are expressions of current emotional states.

The success of their debut single Washed Up, which immediately gained traction on Spotify and radios, shows that the band hits a nerve with their signature and contemporary sound. Their 4-song EP Bad Energy lets us dive deeper into Sharktank’s colorful world. For Myself is building the bridge towards the hyper-productive trio’s upcoming debut album and again combines the best of these two worlds.

The past decade has been marked as a major refreshment of the jazz scene around the world, including key cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and London. This new generation of musicians made a real renaissance of the genre, once again taking it from the underground to the mainstream, attracting completely new audiences. The same mission is guided by the musicians of Wrocław based band EABS. They have been working on the concept of "reconstruction from deconstruction" since 2012, often redefining the classics from several decades ago, mixing them with the latest genres of contemporary urban music, creating a completely new quality and original sound. It is possible that many will claim that this is no longer jazz, but sometimes you have to demolish and rebuild
to create something completely new - based on the old foundations.

Somewhere between hip hop and jazz. Ferdinand Schwarz, Darius Heid, Lukas Wilmsmeyer and Leon Raum build beats, shape songs, create spheres of sound and pushing grooves - all live on stage and completely connected to the moment. The band's extreme spontaneity creates an extraordinary and powerful connection with audience, space and vibe. Whether on the festival stage, in the club or in the living room, the longer you listen, the more you are part of the whole. And creates a new world together.

The concert of Bokoya is presented by popNRW / Landesmusikrat NRW, sponsored by the Ministry of Economics, Innovation, Digitalization and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The concert with Bokoya takes place within the project "Nachwuchsförderung c/o pop 2021" sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of NRW.

LARI LUKE

LARI LUKE

She stands there as if in true superheroine pose: the colorful braids á la Harley Quinn blow in the wind of the stage fans, the chest of her top is not emblazoned with a Superman S but with a meat cheese sandwich, her fists are stretched straight in the air, ready to take off at any second, the spotlights project the outline of a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel into the festival sky, the crowd goes wild: Lari Luke is the superhero the DJ scene deserves and needs. A shrill guardian, an irrepressible fire-starter, a colorful knight of bass.

Lari Luke's strongest superpower, however, is and remains her ability to give people the feeling of boundless freedom for a moment. Shake them up completely for once and blow their minds.

At c/o pop xoxo 2021, LARI LUKE will play a DJ set.

The DJ set with LARI LUKE takes place as part of the funding project " c/o pop 2021-musichubgermany" and is supported by Initiative Musik gemeinnützige Projektgesellschaft GmbH with project funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.

ANNAGEMINA
Thu 22 04, 23:00

ANNAGEMINA

Annagemina is presented by POP-BÜRO Region Stuttgart.

ANNAGEMINA fuse in their music confused sounds, deep basses with electronic loops and extravagant song structures to futuristic anti-pop songs. Dark atmospheric sound combinations that sometimes caress, sometimes sting.

Nested tracks that jump wonderfully anarchic between house, ambient and indie gloom. In between sparkle rapturous pop melodies that are promptly crumbled by choppy beats and deep bass pads. The music of Anna Illenberger and Michael Fiedler does not follow any common formula. It finds its spirit in the same remote wormhole through which the Dirty Projectors or Portishead have already escaped genre conventions.

The concert with ANNAGEMINA is part of the project " c/o pop 2021-musichubgermany" and is supported by the Initiative Musik gemeinnützige Projektgesellschaft GmbH with project funds of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.

How to sync in GSA Vol. 2: Best practices, sync strategies and dos and don’ts (focus on brands & advertising) (EN)

Following the success of last year’s workshop on music synchronization for film and tv in German speaking countries, c/o pop xoxo and CNM joined forces again to offer the 2nd volume of an Expert Session focused on music sync. This year's target topic is advertising and brands: two highly experienced professionals will give their insights and tips for building successful strategies in the sector.

Part 1: Music in Advertising: the System, the Players – and You

Markus Linde, independent music consultant and agent, provides an updated view on the processes of music usage in advertising in Germany together with practical advice for working your catalogue. From the original musical idea to the final decision – and how to get a foot in the door.

Speaker: Markus Linde

Part 2: From Music Sync to Audio Strategy for Brands

"Music Sync" is not about selecting the right music for a tv ad campaign anymore. With sound logos, audio branding, podcasts, clubhouse events, artist collaborations and so much more, the need for a holistic audio strategy has become more and more essential for modern brands and companies. Julian Krohn is Creative Director for Music & Audio at Germany's top advertising agency. He will discuss several of his "music & brands" cases, the dos and don'ts of the sync business and will take a deep dive into brands’ music and audio strategies.

Speaker: Julian Krohn

AK Connecting Smart Music Cities and Regions

AK Connecting Smart Music Cities and Regions

In the working group for the nationwide exchange of the music industry "Connecting Smart Music Cities and Regions" of BV Pop, pop promoters, actors from the music industry, science and networks as well as representatives from politics and administration meet to exchange experiences, pain points and best practice models, for example with regard to the cooperation with administration and politics. The focus is as much on the exchange between urban and rural areas as on the exchange between music cities. The working group came into being in response to an increasing need for nationwide networking and cooperation between individual metropolises and regions. The goals of the working group are to improve the cooperation between cities and surrounding areas in order to increase the visibility of popular music culture, to present a networking platform that also motivates artists to participate, to evaluate the digital transformation during the Corona crisis, and to work out support and financial structures for solo self-employed artists under the expert advice of the GMM.

This session is divided into two parts:

Part 1: On digitalization during the corona crisis.
Part 2: On the situation of solo self-employed people

Part 1: On Digitization in the Corona Crisis

This Network Summit of the working group "Connecting Smart Music Cities and Regions" addresses the interactions between digitalization and the corona crisis. Moderated by Olaf Kretschmar (Berlin Music Commission, BV POP), Walter Ercolino (Pop-Büro Region Stuttgart), Claudia Schwarz (MusicTech Germany) and Frank Sonder (TEDx Speaker | Host | Creator) will share their perspectives and experiences on the topic and engage in an exchange with the participants. Questions will be addressed such as: What has the crisis taught us? What are the prospects for the future? Which tools will accompany us beyond the crisis and which are missing?

Speakers: Walter Ercolino, Claudia Schwarz, Frank Sonder
Moderator: Olaf Kretschmar

The topic will be discussed further in our session Once upon a time only digital - successful formats for online events with a focus on digital events & best practices starting at 3pm.

Part 2: The situation of the solo self-employed

This Network Summit of the working group "Connecting Smart Music Cities and Regions" is the prelude to a campaign on the role of solo self-employed in the music industry in cooperation with the expert committee "Music Networks" of the Gesellschaft für Musikwirtschafts- und Musikkulturforschung GMM e.V. It focuses on the situation of solo self-employed in Germany in the context of the corona crisis. After an introduction on the development of solo self-employment and the role of solo self-employed in the music industry by Univ.-Prof. Dr. phil. habil. Carsten Winter, funding consultant Rosita Kuerbis will present funding opportunities for solo self-employed artists before singer Gloria Blau will give input from the perspective of solo self-employed artists. Following the short inputs (each about 10 minutes), questions will be discussed in plenary with the participants. These are questions such as: Why is the number of solo self-employed artists increasing and what is the special pioneering role of the music industry and music culture in this context? Why does the support of ever-larger numbers of solo self-employed people pose a new structural challenge? Are support offers at the federal level suitable for solo self-employed to be able to achieve a new start, to professionalize themselves in the long term and to network with the industry? To what extent are support offers at the federal level suitable for solo self-employed people to achieve a new start, to professionalize themselves in the long term and to network with the industry? What platforms, networking structures, communication tools and instruments exist for solo self-employed and where is there a need for improvement?

Speakers: Dr. phil. habil. Carsten Winter, Rosita Kuerbis, Gloria Blau
Moderation: Olaf Kretschmar

What is actually going wrong here?

With Viva la VUCA! a format debuted at last year's c/o pop xoxo that tried to ask the right questions to make the Next Normal bolder. Interdisciplinary and different. The idea was to find social innovation beyond classic norms and the usual "business as usual." One of the faces of the series was also Christoph Bornschein, a particularly influential digital whisperer for boards of large companies and Dax corporations. Among the clients* of his digital agency TLGG are Montblanc, Lufthansa or Deutsche Bahn and his specialty is the question of how digital can create real added value for products and customers - beyond communication and marketing. Today we want to know from him: What's actually going wrong here? Why does the culture and events industry, despite all its efforts, not manage to be heard and treated in the same way as car manufacturers or airlines?

Speaker: Christoph Bornschein
Moderators: Terry Krug, Ralph Christoph

This Interview will be conducted in German in cooperation with the Clubstiftung Hamburg.

Shortly before the upcoming official membership opening of the association on May 1, 2021, PRO MUSIK and I'M SOUND (insurance for music on the circuit) want to use the platform of the c/o pop xoxo to explain who is behind the association, what goals are to be achieved with what means and, last but not least, what concrete benefits membership brings. Will Page & Helen Smith: New dynamics of the long tail (EN)

Will Page, former Chief Economist at Spotify and PRS for Music talks to IMPALA's Executive Chair Helen Smith about the displacement of existing businesses by technological and economic change. Rethinking the fundamentals is key to a sustainable future for our industry. Page's first book, Tarzan Economics: Eight Principles for Pivoting Through Disruption, will be published in May.

At Spotify Will Page helped redefine catalogue and articulated the global value of music copyright. A passionate communicator, Will's work is regularly featured in Billboard, the Economist and the Financial Times. His most recent publication examined COVID-19's impact on Britain's live and recorded music industries. In his forthcoming book "Tarzan Economics," he extrapolates music's journey into eight guiding principles for pivoting through the ubiquitous disruption in nearly all industries. Expect the unexpected with transferable lessons coming from Starbucks, Tupperware and even Groucho Marx. Businesses need to be ready and willing to change and, if necessary, be prepared to rebuild entire organizations and business models to do so.

Join Helen Smith and Will Page in a conversation about disruption in our modern music industry.

Multi-Issue Lives – Intersectionality and the Music Industry
Fri 23 04, 14:00

Multi-Issue Lives – Intersectionality and the Music Industry

"There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle because we do not live single-issue lives," wrote US writer and activist Audre Lorde in 1982. A few years later, lawyer Kimberlé Crenshaw used the term "intersectionality" for the first time. It describes the intersection of different forms of discrimination in one person. For example, racism and sexism do not simply add up, but lead to independent experiences of discrimination.

Common music industry practices also bring to light different types of discrimination - unfortunately, little has changed in this regard even one year after Hanau and Black Lives Matter. What place does intersectionality have in pop culture anyway? Whose body, whose voice and whose history can be represented in pop music? What injustices exist in the music industry system? And how can underrepresented artists and actors be given more attention?

Analog cultural exchange is still sorely missed, but in the meantime countless very successful digital event formats have been and are being implemented. In this session, we take a look at the musical youth project for young refugees, the "collective practices" event that brought together cultural actors in a wide variety of formats, and the c/o pop itself. What are the lessons learned from all the digital events? How exactly did the implementation go, and what can we take away from them for the future? After a brief presentation of the individual formats, the subsequent discussion will also be open to questions and contributions from interested participants.

Presentation of the continuing education program "Transformation Manager for Sustainable Culture
Fri 23 04, 15:00

Presentation of the continuing education program

The cultural and media sectors play a crucial role in the necessary transformation of society into a climate-friendly society. However, in order to fill this role, there is a need for experts who can provide advice on cultural and media productions. Together with its partners c/o pop Convention, IHK Köln and the EnergieAgentur.NRW, the Aktionsnetzwerk Nachhaltigkeit in Culture and Media has created a training program to support motivated actors in assuming and fulfilling this transformative role. The aim of the program is to impart knowledge on how cultural institutions and media productions can take the path to greater sustainability. In addition to imparting knowledge, the program also serves as a networking opportunity for actors among themselves and with experts.

Graduates will be able to use their knowledge as transformation managers and sustainability ambassadors to initiate and implement processes and projects in institutions that serve as role models for the sector and, beyond that, for a climate-friendly society.

A pilot project with 25 participants will be carried out this spring. The official start of the training will then be in the fall of 2021. For more information please click on the link below.

Forum Musikwirtschaft zur Corona-Pandemie und ihren Auswirkungen

Bridging Aid I, II and III, November and December Aid, New Start Aid, NEUSTART KULTUR I, aid programs of the federal states - the funding cornucopia is full and one would actually think that the federal and state governments have done enough so that everyone can survive the economic consequences of the Corona crisis well. How can it be, one might ask, that many sectors of the economy, such as numerous business sectors of the music industry, nevertheless criticize the considerable aid packages, consider them insufficient and make further demands? The Forum Music Industry explains its foundation and shows why a "new start for music" will fail without improvements to the current aid packages and further support measures. The Forum Music Industry consists of the seven most important associations in the sector: BDKV (Federal Association of the Concert and Event Industry), BVMI (Federal Association of the Music Industry), DMV (German Music Publishers Association), IMUC (Interest Group Music Managers & Consultants), LIVEKOMM (Association of Music Venues in Germany), SOMM (Society Of Music Merchants) and VUT (Association of Independent Music Entrepreneurs). It thus encompasses the key sectors of the music industry and sees itself as a discourse space in which central issues of the music industry are identified and discussed in order to address them to politicians and the public.

Artist Support System – The Age of Independent Music Artists (EN)

Independent artists and their partners are releasing more music than ever before and their market share is growing year on year. Thanks to social media, streaming and Artist Direct platforms, access to the music market has become much easier. There is much speculation about how Artist Direct platforms will change the music industry. Existing structures are being rethought and tailored to the needs of artists, with fair and transparent remuneration. The business model of Artist Direct platforms, with innovative and intuitive services, is booming. Initially positioned for digital distribution, they have expanded their scope to include relevant and customised solutions: data analytics, physical distribution, CD & vinyl production, neighbouring rights, promotion, marketing, mastering, publishing, financing and much more are part of the services. Independent artists and their partners no longer have to pass through the doors of multiple gatekeepers in order to get their music out into the world and build a fanbase. Ronny Krieger, General Manager Europe, Patreon talks with Sarah Hildering, CEO and Co-Founder LEDO, Colin Schrinner, Head of TuneCore, Germany and Donata Kramarz, Artist at NOSOYO and Co-Founder Kindness Records, about the generation of Do-It-Yourself-Entrepreneurs, current tools, and how artists and their partners can find the necessary support system for a successful career.

The medium needs a massage again!

The medium needs a massage again!

Can knowledge still be power in the age of its abundance? asked the scientist and journalist Mercedes Bunz almost ten years ago in view of the ever-increasing abundance of information that accompanies the ever-advancing digital transformation of the environment, and thus also of our media. And what does that mean for the here and now, where those who "shout" the loudest on their platforms, channels and profiles presume to be in the right? With Twitter as the endless 280-character press conference of a U.S. president, Telegram between a communication tool for oppositionists and a gathering place for conspiracy theorists, Twitch on its way from a streaming platform for gamers to a competitor for YouTube, TikTok as the new subculture of Generation Z and Clubhouse as a meeting place for old white men, while LinkedIn is preparing to become the new Facebook? And Facebook wants to take off again with Oculus? And when will the podcast bubble finally burst in the midst of all this? The word is out: we need to talk!

TINCON: No matter what the crisis is – How Corona changes our relationship to music

Corona concerts on the balconies of Italy. Canceled festivals. Pandemic as a theme in songs and albums. All this showed us last year that crises, and the Corona pandemic in particular, also change our relationship to music. Among other things, this is why the research project "Music Use in the Time of Corona" was launched in April 2020, which scientifically addresses the question of how the pandemic affects us in our listening behavior. What is Gen Z streaming in pandemic times? What role does art and culture play when the world stands still/goes down?

TINCON - teenageinternetworkconference - sends c/o pop what it knows best: young people and info about the Internet. In their sessions, the experts explain to elders & the music industry what they should know to become Gen Z savvy.

Speaker: Sofia Hoffmeister

This Expert Session will be held in German and is organized in cooperation with TINCON – teenageinternetwork conference.

Enda Gallery

©Lena Siripa Kauck

This showcase is presented by The Embassy of Ireland, Berlin.

For 8 years Enda Gallery has lived in Berlin, a city which is itself a character within his songs. Berlin has inspired feelings of spiritual, sexual, creative and political salvation for the Irish artist and through friends and soul mates, who now share the same journey, he has emerged in a state of pure inspiration - unshackled from expectations of the future and traumas of the past.

Enda Gallery is an artist with a real purpose, and that is to create beautiful and liberating art. He takes influence from genre defying artists such as Frank Ocean and Prince - mixed with the deep sincerity of songwriters like Sufjan Stevens, Alicia Keys and even Freddie Mercury. His fresh sense of creative deliverance provides some of the truest realisations and experiences in his songs. Beyond the purpose of Enda Gallery’s craft are his goals as an artist.
To create deep, innovative and meaningful music as well as images, films
and messages that connect with as many people around the world as
possible. To in turn create an inspiring world.

Top or Bottom w/ Ebow

For this interview special cumming collective invited Ebow and will throw out a bunch of random topics at her to explain why those things are either overrated or underrated.

Ebow’s lyrics range between diary entries and political outcry. She is both provocative and sensitive. As a rapper she focuses on fighting against sexism, racism and homophobia. The artist who lives and works in Berlin just released her latest EP „QUEER AF II“, filled with three queer love songs, dedicated to the community.

cumming is a mainly English-speaking queer-feminist collective based in Cologne. They are building an inclusive, supportive community while promoting representation for marginalized artists, creators and organizers by creating cultural events where people who don’t speak German can find a place as well.

cumming and Ebow are a perfect match! Both work for an open, solidary and equal society and promote diversity in pop culture.

The concert is presented by Deutschlandfunk Nova.

Sebastian Eggerbauer, better known as Telquist, is one of the most exciting rising indie artists Germany has to offer. With his songs like Mojo or Trash Talk, he has already been able to play his way into the top rankings of the German university radio charts. In them, Telquist sings his usual laid-back, but with ambition to speed of self-expression, demarcation,
coolness and the flight to the front. His musical socialization is broad. In his youth he played bass in indie, reggae and ska-punk bands. So it's not surprising that his songs move somewhere between doubtful dejection and pure euphoria.

Johanna Besseling

Behind the deliberately gender-neutral name LOTA hides the cologne-based singer, songwriter and producer Lotta Holtei. Her music is inspired by indie-pop influences and electronic lo-fi elements, mystical sounds and distinctive beats, contrasted by calm piano sounds and soulful lyrics. Her soft and haunting voice carries you away into a spherical sound world.

The first single "GIRL" from her upcoming debut EP is a statement in the sign of female empowerment and an appeal to the
self-image of one's own independence. It's not about romantic Hollywood happy endings on the big screen, it's about the very personal small successes you celebrate when you realize that you are enough for yourself.

JEREMIAS is presented by 1Live.

If you mix a little bit of Parcels with a little bit of Tom Misch and Men I Trust as sources of inspiration, the result is disco funk that no one can stand still for. JEREMIAS, four guys from Hanover with an average age of 20 years, are probably no longer an insider tip. With their first EP Du musst an den Frühling glauben they played some festivals and support shows for Giant Rooks or Ok Kid in 2019. That the quartet is well received, you can tell already by the fact that their fans sold out 18 shows of their first own tour completely. Last year they released their second EP alma - the soul in Spanish. "It's an EP about love and sorrow. However theatrical it may seem, that inspired us significantly," says the band about their second record. And that's what JEREMIAS is all about: funky and groovy songs that you can't help but dance along to, alongside beautiful ballads that quite touch you.

Berlin - a city celebrated for its hyper-liberated queer culture and sexual hedonism - is the backdrop of 21-year-old Finn Ronsdorf. Raised in a small village in the Black Forest of Germany, he discovered early on that there must be more than a dictated path through life and that it can be found only within oneself. Looking for more than the casual encounters that define so many in the city, Finn's songs question the concept of a love based on jealousy and possession. Why do we flee from loneliness? Why do we look for somebody to fill our emptiness? Why is there a constant need for achievement? Each song takes the listener on a journey - teetering between playful parody and heartbreaking anguish.

Mulay

©Ali Kanaan

Mulay is, in short, a Berlin-based alternative/R&B singer-songwriter, producer and artist. However, the emphasis is rarely so much on the artistic.

She started her first band projects as a music student for jazz and pop in the Netherlands. The experiences she had there sparked her multidisciplinary approach and the continued journey of discovery in her artistic self-realization.

In a world of fleeting moments, Mulay wants to make music that lasts. The source of her inspiration are artists* who have gone their own way, such as FKA Twigs, SZA and Sevdaliza. Sound textures, vivid imagery, intimate emotions and irrevocably infectious grooves from a wide musical spectrum cross-pollinate. Mulay shapes a kaleidoscopic downtempo sound that can be captured at the intersections of soulful R&B, trip-hop, emphatic pop and electronica.

Ebow
Fri 23 04, 20:30

Ebow

Ebow's message remains provocative and political. Solo, but also as a member of the Gaddafi Gals, she raps against sexism, racism and homophobia, for an open, solidary and equal society. The artist, who now lives in Berlin, is currently working on her new album.

"QUEER AF II" is the successor of the EP "EBOW 400", which was created in the thought to make an EP with queer love songs for the community every summer. "QUEER AF II" is a diverse, short EP that deals with the topic of lovesong in very different ways: "Shorty" is a catchy dissonant uptempo number with a hook that mills itself into your ear canals,"Tunnel" is a deeper track with R'n'B leanings and a casual jazzy vibe. The EP is completed by "Friends", which was already released in summer and smoothly celebrates the friend zone.

As before, Ebow playfully combines old school, new school, battlerap and R'n'B. Ebow's lyrical palette is equally broad, ranging from diary to political pamphlet. For "QUEER AF II" the motto is "Love is the message".

My Ugly Clementine

©Leni Renard

Supported by Austrian Music Export.

This supergroup from Vienna is really serious about one thing: having fun! MY UGLY CLEMENTINE create a more than contemporary dusting of guitar with vitamin-rich borrowings from the 90s indie/college rock era. A post-punk approach here, irresistible pop hooks there, strong, serious messages - and still a sing-along chorus and a smile on the lips.

The founding story alone contributes to the creation of the legend: On Valentine's Day (sic!) 2019, a mere picture of the newly assembled foursome on social media is enough to create an initial wave of excitement - because the personnel is well known: Sophie Lindinger (Leyya) as mastermind has fulfilled the long-cherished wish to work together with musicians* she holds in high esteem - and so Mira Lu Kovacs (5K HD, Schmieds Puls) stands next to her on guitar, for example. Kathrin Kolleritsch, who just made headlines with her queer-feminist rap solo project KEROSIN95, joins her on drums and vocals.

The "supergroup" was ready, which in the meantime, supplemented by Nastasja Ronck (Lucid Kid), plays the stages far beyond the country's borders. Until today there is no "front person" - the vocals are changed and distributed according to the all-star principle.

Since summer 2019, SALÒ, who lives in Vienna, has been making music for dog pranksters, people who refuse to work and everyone else who has feelings. Despite all crises, SALÒ released his debut EP " Tränen zu Wein" in the summer of 2020 and has since been writing songs about life, suffering and probably the most beautiful mental illness in the world - love. The whole thing sounds like a wild promenade mixture of EBM, pop and dreamy electropunk. Dirty synths, honest platitudes and influences from DAF to Herbert Grönemeyer make SALÒ an ode to the flesh, the drive and heartbreak per se.

SALÒ's new single "Oxytocin" describes the cold turkey of the "cuddle hormone" and neurotransmitter

Love, respect and honesty is the credo of SALOMEA. Their music pushes boundaries, it is a profound entertainment, it is art. This also demands real listening, but at the same time gives so much. With their music, Rebekka Salomea and her band, consisting of Yannis Anft, Olilver Lutz and Leif Berger, draw a blueprint of the music of the future. The band's second album Bathing in Flowers is a unique melting pot of jazz soaked in hiphop, RnB and varieties of contemporary electronic music.

Martin Kohlstedt describes his way of working as modular composing. The pieces are in constant motion and do not follow a fixed form even during live performances. The success of his previous albums TAG, NACHT, STROM and STRÖME show that his skills are also internationally recognized. With his new album FLUR, which was released in November last year, he continues his previous work. Improvisation is as important to him as eye level with the audience, the courage to fail and the interaction with space, people and context.

Malugi b2b ferrari rot

Malugi's idiosyncratic approach to dance music has come a long way: Risen to fame within the Cologne scene, he became a household name in his hometown over night, playing venues that he was yet to access legally. First steps as a DJ were soon followed by explorations into music production, which subsequently lead him to Berlin to pursue studies in audio design. A six months hiatus in New York finally helped him overcome his internalized pop-phobia, allowing him to rigorously experiment with a multitude of musical ideas and influences.

ferrari rot is the co-founder of Berlin’s favorite party entertainment service Dimenzione Danza, a club night for DJs, drag performers and overall freak bitches alike. Starting out just before dance floors were swept by the pandemic, she had to move to cyberspace to cut her rave teeth in the white tiled dance-cube that is HÖR, making a reputation for herself through several appearances that showcase her uncompromising, dynamic sound with an evident affinity for accelerated beats.

At c/o pop xoxo 2021 Malugi and ferrari rot will play a B2B set.

CV Vision

CV Vision

The genesis of many of these tracks began when CV Vision moved to Berlin 2014. His flat has a small chamber where he could fit a drum set, so he trated the walls with foam, and in true DIY style, dives headfirst into recording these tracks. It was the natural next step on an audio adventure that first began when CV Vision picked up the guitar in his teens, and a couple years later started recording with friends in his home town of Bayreuth. Fast forward ten years and here is his debut - a culmination of practising chops and learning instruments, mastering recording techniques and fine-tuning the CV Vision sound.

It's a sound that condenses elements of acid rock, psych soul, library funk and new wave oddities into a move soundtrack for your mind. It's a journey from 60s west coast LSD-drenched excursions to 80s synth and post-punk mutations. Tropical is a plunge into another time, another music you can simply swim around in and explore.

PAAR

Running by the name of PAAR, three German artists forged their public personae to one sonic canvas to paint their musical visions in sound. Soaked in layers of classic New Wave and post-punk of the eighties, swathed by modern electronic sounds and experimental punk, PAAR have created a musical body consisting of an intriguing mix of simple beats, minimalistic synths, refined with steady textures of guitar and bass, sanded with distinctive lyrics and vocals. If Blade Runner had been set in the dystopian Berlin rather than the City of Angels, PAAR would have been the soundtrack.

Vaovao
Fri 23 04, 22:30

Vaovao

Vaovao is presented by the Institute for Pop Music at Folkwang University of the Arts.

Vaovao - Six letters of a journey through synthesizer sounds and sound collages, supported by fragmentary violins, driving beats and a hypothermic singing that hardly allows for emotions. Vaovao's music draws on a wide variety of elements from the recent history of pop music, reflecting or quoting them, but always remaining more than a purely retro phenomenon due to new combinations. The lines of the German lyrics are sometimes dadaistic, they are fragments of narratives and movements, literary oscillations and vibrations that challenge. Sound and text move in musical and lyrical spectrums, rather than in delineated patterns. The music swims freely instead of delineating itself. And at the same time, it doesn't hollow itself out; it remains dense and engaging. This is not a journey on the way to a destination. The destination is the journey. A journey that is just beginning.

GiiRL

©Rieke de Vrieß

GiiRL - the duo consisting of Milan Hofmann and Dennis Hölscher - have already played their way through some renowned Cologne clubs in 2017 with their first EP "Drowning". Nothing is missing for the two-man band: the virtuoso guitar playing of Milan and the drumming skills of Dennis provide a unique sound, where both the highest and lowest notes come from the complex sounds of Milan's guitar. Only a bass synthesizer supports the two on stage.

Their talent was practically laid in the cradle of the two. Milan, son of the legendary Cologne music producer Wolfgang Stach, started playing the violin and guitar at a very early age. He also began studying guitar at the Cologne Music Academy at the age of 16. Dennis has also been playing the drums since he was 9 years old. "Dennis' incredible musical sensitivity and energy are an extreme incentive and catalyst for me in this," says Milan. "We complement and inspire each other in a unique way. We don't need clear
procedures, one look is enough and we know where we're going."

Sarah Farina

Sarah Farina sprinkles positivity over the darkest bass. She’s innovative, she’s skilful, and she’s the smiling antithesis of genre cliques and sour scene elitists. What you hear is all you need to know. And what you’ll hear from Sarah Farina’s sets is seamlessly blended bass-heavy footwork and futuristic beats, with fearless forays through R&B and UK Funky. It’s inclusive, forward-thinking and unrestrained. It’s a genre-rejecting style that she’s named rainbowbass.

She is recognised and revered by the best of her bass music contemporaries, with connections to crews worldwide including Teklife, Hyperdub, Deep Medi, Buraka Som Sistema and Exit Records. Capable of holding her own in line-ups alongside artists as diverse as DJ Storm, Laurent Garnier, Om Unit, Kode9, François K and Lunice, her sets unite the dance-floor, equally impressive to industry insiders and those who just want to dance.

But there are also numerous other planets. The music universe gives an overview of the most important elements and actors of the "music industry" system. It shows what relationships the planets have with one another and ultimately answers a very central question: who actually pays whom?

How do I finance the first steps? How will my music be heard? These and other essential questions are discussed here. After the set-up is outlined, you can ask Leila your individual questions.

I want to Breakthrough! How Amazon Music promotes emerging artists

In July 2020, Amazon Music launches Breakthrough – the initiative to support the stars of tomorrow. In this session, Dr. Alexander Franck, Head of Label Relations | Artist Relations, and Henning Rümenapp, Head of Programming and Editorial, present the artist initiative at Amazon Music in detail. They will be supported by pop singer Malik Harris, who has been part of the initiative since its launch together with the band Provinz as one of two German breakthrough artists, and will talk about his own experiences in the music business. Amazon Music will also provide insights into the selection criteria, how artists can qualify for the program and what a Breakthrough campaign at Amazon Music can look like in concrete terms. This is because each campaign is individually tailored to the artist's brand and vision: from audio and video content, global marketing measures such as out-of-home advertising in metropolises like New York, London and Berlin, increased visibility in Amazon Music's playlists and programming, high-profile Amazon Original songs available exclusively on Amazon Music, support for the artists' Twitch channels and more.

Signals from the echo chamber – Who is speaking?

Masks, clothing, and costumes conceal, reveal, and adorn the body, constructing belonging and demarcation. Playing with signs can help expose or overcome stereotypes, opening up the notion of identity and creating space for the improbable. In this way, multiple positions emerge in favor of a polyphony in art and pop culture as well as everyday life, in opposition to the imperative of "authenticity porn." How can artists* relate spaces, roles, and positions without repeating visual hierarchies and stereotypical representations, and design diverse realities?

Since the summer of 2020 at the latest, topics such as diversity, discrimination and equality have also been discussed by a broad public in this country. Where does discrimination still take place? And: What does the future hold? Empowerment: Women* in the music business – Safe Space #2

After the first Safe Space at last year's c/o pop xoxo, the situation has not changed significantly in 2021: Women* are still severely underrepresented in the music industry. This is often also due to a lack of visibility. There are too few visible female role models. Women* are also significantly underrepresented in networking - in contrast to their male colleagues. The network musicNRWwomen* wants to change this. We invite you to join us for a second exchange in Safe Space and get to know two great women and role models: Amilli is a singer from Bochum and at the latest since she won the 1LIVE Krone in 2018 and the popNRW award in 2019, it is clear that she is no longer easy to imagine the music world without her. On her current EP, she also deals with feminist issues, among other things.

The radio, and television presenter Bianca Hauda (ARTE TWIST) is already there for the second time. She interviews Amilli and talks to her about empowerment, the life of a female musician, touring, networking, sexism, producing music herself and planned new releases. Afterwards you can ask your questions.

This Breakout Session is designed as a safe space and is for anyone who identifies as female as well as non-binary, trans, intergender, and gender fluid people.

Boomy, Boxy, Bright: Producer Talk with your songs

Music producers are (mostly) not on stage like the artists they produce. And yet they are where all the threads and tracks come together. Accordingly, there are countless legends and myths about the "Midas Touch", with which many a producer has turned a recording into something that distinguishes it and has even made it famous. In this way, producers became additional band members, their studio an instrument. George Martin became the fifth Beatle, Berry Gordy the epitome of the Motown hit factory, Brian Eno the prototype innovator of recording techniques, and Conny Plank's farm a pilgrimage town for musicians and bands from all over the world. But in the end, it's hard work, years of experience and a keen sense for the artists that still make for the success of good producers today. So what is phase, we want to know from two experienced producers who have worked with many contemporary German artists and bands, such as International Music, Juli, Ich&Ich, Von Spar, Sportfreunde Stiller, The Notwist and Die Sterne. We want to find out how they approach songs and tracks, what they pay attention to and what is important to them. For this purpose, the two will take three songs each, on the basis of which they will explain their work. You want Olaf and Jan Philipp to talk about your song? Then send it to us! You can find all the information about submitting your song here.

Let's talk about money – Funding for popular music in Germany

Besides skills and contacts, one thing is important for professional musicians: money. Things like studio recordings, music videos or tours cost money before they bring in any, and often the expense is higher than the return. That's why there are various funding programs for music projects in Germany. But what does "project funding" actually mean and who can apply for it? What I should know about psychological stress as a musician

What I should know about psychological stress as a musician

At the beginning of an artistic career, in addition to the joy of musical creation, some of the dark sides of the industry are also very present: the pressure to prove and present yourself, to meet the right people, to participate and not to bend, emotional ups and downs with successes and failures, to overcome your own fears and not to lose courage in all the intense work. And yes, now there is also the crisis.... A good reason to offer especially young artists the possibility to find a healthy way of dealing with stress and all kinds of psychological burdens at an early stage or just now. In this Breakout Session with Anne Löhr, graduate psychologist, therapist and founder of the Mental Health in Music Association, the typical psychological stresses of musicians, but also players in the music industry, especially in times of crisis, will be examined more closely: How are stress, mood swings and depressive symptoms actually caused? What can you do yourself to prevent psychological stress or to combat it at an early stage? What helps when you can no longer cope on your own? And when does the point come when you should get help? The workshop provides important knowledge and strategies to deal with psychological stress. Open questions are also very welcome!

Going International: Export Strategies for Newcomers
Sat 24 04, 15:30

Going International: Export Strategies for Newcomers

This session will present approaches to export strategies for newcomers. Fabian Till Reinkenhoff from the band Darjeeling will report on how an international orientation can succeed on one's own, which questions artists should ask themselves at the beginning and which requirements are helpful in order to gain a foothold abroad. In addition, Philipp Jacob Pahl, Managing Director of Budde Talent Agency, will provide insight into how an agency can combine communications management, live/booking and public relations from a single source as an external partner in order to implement successful export strategies for artists.

The session will be moderated by Julia Waldmann, who, as project manager, is in charge of the International Tour Funding, one of the funding programs with which the Initiative Musik supports musicians financially in the realization of their international tours/projects.

The event is primarily aimed at newcomer musicians. Michael Wallies, Head of Press and Public Relations at Initiative Musik, will begin by introducing the nationwide funding organization and its offerings for musicians. At the end of the session, there will be enough time for a Q&A session, where the speakers can answer questions from the participants and give tips for their projects.

Speakers: Fabian Till Reinkenhoff, Philipp Jacob-Pahl, Michael Wallies
Moderation: Julia Waldmann

Music trends on TikTok: The dynamics behind it

TikTok's creative DNA is heavily influenced by music. The leading mobile short video platform is revolutionizing the way people discover music by simplifying hits from today and yesterday into sounds. When music is this compact and viral, it influences everything it comes into contact with: brands, consumers, producers, publishers and artists. In his talk, Andreas Hänisch, Label Partnerships Manager at TikTok, explains the dynamics behind it.

Playlist Marketing: How do I get my first playlist placements?
Sat 24 04, 16:15

Playlist Marketing: How do I get my first playlist placements?

This Breakout Session is about exactly this question that so many aspiring musicians ask themselves. Without beating around the bush, David finally brings light into the darkness with experiences and tips from his own music career. A pragmatic step-by-step guide for Spotify, SubmitHub and Co. is the goal of the session. As part of this, the following questions will be answered: What types of playlists are there and where are the differences? What does "playlist suitability" mean for my own music? How do I get playlist curators to actually listen to my songs? How do I improve my chances of being added to playlists? At what point does a steady income from playlist streams become realistic? Of course, you can also ask David other questions. We look forward to hearing from you!

Speaker: David Nienhaus
