We’re all looking for a home, a story, an anchor in the midst of breathtakingly fast imagery, opinions and ratings. Dreams and reality, wishes and coercion, desire and insight lay the foundation for human passion. We constantly shift between them but how can we stay true to ourselves in the meantime?

LIE NING is an artist from Berlin who gives a musical home to this complex bundle of emotions. He is from an environment which likewise changes its face continuously. With his velvety voice, encompassed with faint piano hammers, shimmering electronic elements and racing heartbeats the 22 year old creates a startling yet embracing intimacy. Conveyed by poised confidence and unapologetic openness the songs manage to take a look at the audience’s souls while reflecting what lies dee- pest within an artist who could not be more captivating. With his EP "traffic songs for the inbetweens" the young singer delivers a debut of impressive maturity, surprising depth and international format. His music is timelessly modern, gently energetic and open-heartedly brainy. Between Indie, Pop, Wave and Disco a bittersweet place of hopeful melancholy, an island wit- hin the moloch, a word embedded in silence is created.

LIE NING was born into the chaotic arty environment of Prenzlauer Berg in the mid-nineties. The housing project he lived in with his single mother was home to various characters from all walks of life. An orchestra of languages, images and melodies surrounded the young life making him receptive to the beauty that this unusual family was capable of creating. In this environment all art forms melted together into a collective form of expression. LIE NING was interested in dance, fashion and fine art. Visual arts influence his work until today. What engages him most though, is music. From early on his mother took him to concerts and sho- wed him a world of rhythm and melodies which would never let go of him again. More and more his voice emerged as the most powerful means of expression. Everything he couldn’t convey vi- sually he wrote into songs. LIE NING’s Debut EP has an international sound and universal feel that is unique in this country. Conscious change is the main theme of content. In his own words: "we’re all looking for the best version of ourselves that we can be. But there are strong external influences on the individual which make it easy to lose oneself." With his songs he accompanies us on our search and shows us that everyone can be seen. LIE NING creates bridges with his art. He cat- ches us and takes us home. For a few moments he transports us to a place where we feel at home. "tonight" starts the journey with a light-footed beat and great trust. It deals with special con- nections we only share with few people in our lives. The second track “secret island” is about a secluded refuge from our daily struggles. It in- cludes blurry guitars and floating synths. "alright" describes the vanishing of love and a backdoor, kept open without which life would be easier. "By my side" and "carry you home" fit snugly into the tracklist. A piece by the magnificent Jorja Smith completes this work. In “wandering romance” LIE NING takes Jorja’s soul and makes it into a thoughtful indie pop episode with dreamy vastness and a beautifully sad outline. What combines every aspect of the broad varie- ty of aesthetics and contents is the key part of his voice which lies over the instruments like a pleasant rain shower. Calmly and confidently it speaks directly to the audience, creating inti- macy with strong memorability. The combination of tasteful sounds and outs- tanding song writing creates an impressive musical quality, that is yet to find its match. LIE NING is off to a promising start.
