Licensing music presents a challenge: Copyright is an inherently complex issue, which is further exacerbated by increasing fragmentation, unknown sizes, and inefficiencies. New technologies and current efforts towards more cooperation could now present an opportunity to develop a licensing framework suitable for the 21st century. On Thursday, May 2, 2019, as part of DIGITAL MUSIC, we will discuss how this could be achieved in concrete terms, what obstacles we have to overcome, and what everyone can gain from it, with representatives from various sectors of the music industry. Also present: Becky Brook from JAAK. The London-based tech company is developing blockchain-based solutions for communication, management, and monetization in intellectual property-intensive industries. Last year, JAAK, working together with labels, publishers and other partners, created a prototype for licensing music rights: an industry-wide decentralized data network called KORD - a commercial application is scheduled to follow this year. Becky Brook is responsible for developing JAAK's business with the global music, TV and film industries.

In the NEW TALENT programming line on Friday, May 3, 2019, experienced professionals will once again impart their valuable knowledge and skills relating to music production, promotion, and marketing. This will provide young musicians with useful tools to get off to a flying start in the music industry. Five well-known and renowned experts have already been confirmed.

Albrecht Schrader, besides releasing his solo music on the label Staatsakt he is known as one of the musical directors of the Rundfunk-Tanzorchester Ehrenfeld for Jan Böhmermann's TV show "Neo Magazin Royale”. In his workshop, he will teach you what constitutes a "good song" and how to write one.

Niloufar Behradi-Ohnacker, co-founder of the Blogrebellen, will show in a workshop how female (upcoming) musicians and their promoters and managers can authentically tell their stories on the internet.

Philipp Jacob-Pahl, Managing Director at Budde Talent Agency (BTA), will explain the basics of booking and the interconnections of the music event market in his workshop.

Author, DJ, producer and mastering engineer Numinos will show you how to get competitive sounds out of your bedroom studio, which can also be played in a club.

Dr. Johannes Ripken, managing director and co-founder of the start-up Tamanguu, which develops digital solutions for the music industry, will give two workshops. The first workshop will focus on how to build a strong artist brand which in turn is a prerequisite for building a large fan base. The second workshop will focus on smart networking and developing valuable business relationships - because relationships have never been more important than in today's globalized and digitized music industry.

NEW TALENT is organized by popNRW - Nachwuchsförderung für junge Musiker in NRW und VUT West as part of the c/o pop Convention 2019.

He has been working as a concert agent and tour organizer for over 30 years and, for several years now, has also been drawing attention to developments in the music industry and society as a highly strong-willed publicist. In his 2003 book, he made the readers aware about "Das Geschäft mit der Musik" (The Business with Music) - this reference book is currently in its 7th edition. In April 2019 his new book„Vom Imperiengeschäft. Konzerte - Festivals - Streaming - Soziales. Wie Großkonzerne die kulturelle Vielfalt zerstören“ (From the Empire Business. Concerts - Festivals - Streaming - Social Issues. How large Corporations destroy Cultural Diversity) will be released. On Friday, May 3, 2019, as part of EXCHANGE & CONNECT, Berthold Seliger will present his theories using the example of streaming.

If you want to see him earlier: he will be speaking at ESNS on Friday, January 18, 2019, on the topic of "Empire Business or Cultural Diversity: The Reality of the Concert Business”.

Not least thanks to streaming services such as Netflix, there is a veritable boom in series and films all over the world. As a result, music is increasingly developing from background noise to an essential driver of the storylines - either in the form of licensed songs (Sync) or original compositions.

More and more films means that more and more, better and more unique music is needed. This is why the c/o pop Convention is deliberately bringing together representatives from the film and music industries for the second time, this time on both convention days. We have the first confirmation of two prominent participants for "Rendez-Vous! Music Meets Film": Nikko Weidemann and Mario Kamien, who are the composers for "Babylon Berlin".

"Babylon Berlin", the biggest German series to date, owes its success not least to its music - in return, the series turned the title song "Zu Asche, zu Staub" into a chart hit.

Nikko Weidemann and Mario Kamien, along with director Tom Tykwer, are responsible for this and other prominently featured songs in the series - for their incidental music they were awarded the Grimme Award in 2018.

The singer, guitar player and composer Nikko Weidemann has been working as a film composer for various award-winning feature films and documentaries since 1995. He has worked with Rio Reiser, Nena, Einstürzende Neubauten, Yoko Ono, Nick Cave, Sean Lennon, and Rufus Wainwright among others and has released several records of his own.

Mario Kamien was born in Switzerland. After studying music in Vienna, he released numerous albums, singles, and remixes as part of the duo Dzihan & Kamien. He was also the co-owner of the electronica and pop label Couch Records; now he lives and works as a film composer in Berlin and Vienna.
