Zahn are a new instrumental (noise) rock group consisting of Nic Stockmann (Heads., ex-Eisenvater) Chris Breuer (Heads., ex-The Ocean) and Felix Gebhard (live-Einstürzende Neubauten). A relentless exercise in rhythm and texture. Whether you love the hard riffs of Metz or The Jesus Lizard the big melodies of Torche and Red Fang or the swaggering sounds of The Desert Sessions Zahn packs a punch for you.

At the base of this record lies the classic dynamic of a tightly interlocked rhythm section of drums and bass, presenting a firm foundation for a mad guitarist’s tonal explorations. Zahn is noise rock merging with sludge and post-punk in a spectacular threesome with avant-garde sensibilities, presenting riffs and grooves in abstract patterns and rhythmic cycles, all of which are backed by some seriously hard-hitting drums.

The fact that the basic tracks of these eight songs were recorded in two days is impressive, but even more awe-inspiring is the diversity of sound that this record embodies. Zahn is not merely a collection of angry riffs and harsh noises – a simple burst of energy put on record in a short amount of time. Rather, this record deftly incorporates influences from all kinds of genres, ranging from early 80s post-punk (Tseudo) to krautrock and electronica (Gyhum) to sludge (Lochsonne Schwarz).

Zahn stands in the progressive tradition of musicians from a local scene working together on albums and exploring new grounds regardless of the respective bands they became known for. Like Emerson, Lake and Palmer, the trio of Stockman, Breuer and Gebhard have produced a record that shows them in their unique strengths, but which also allows them to tread new paths. Chris Breuer picks up the lap steel guitar to enhance the six string acrobatics of Felix Gebhard, while the latter takes a seat behind the piano to infuse Staub with some folkloristic beauty.

ZAHN's concert is part of the funding project "c/o pop 2022 musichubgermany " and is supported by the Initiative Musik gemeinnützige Projektgesellschaft GmbH with project funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
