Konzert @
Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld

Priya’s Ragu does R&B, but at the same time it’s unlike any R&B you’ve heard before. It is both strangely familiar and completely unrecognisable. Imagine Kehlani, Summer Walker or Snoh Aalegra infused with South Indian instrumentation to have a rough idea of the marvel, the profound magic of Priya's beguiling music. Produced by her brother, Japhna Gold, and written entirely by Priya and her brother, the music is drenched in the sounds of her cultural heritage, from grand Kollywood samples (similar to Bollywood but hailing from Tamil Nadu in southern India) and Krishna mantras to traditional tabla and the Tamil language itself. Her music is an essential snapshot of Sri Lankan and South Indian sounds, from Kuthu street dances to religious chants typically heard in temples, to influences from musicians like Ilyaraja, Deva and A.R. Rahman, while keeping both feet firmly in the moment. Priya has a remarkable voice. It is warm and melodious and at the same time infused with an effortless emotion that can express joy as well as desire.

Her songs are about subverting expectations, Priya says: »I want to challenge the stereotypes that Sri Lankan people are essentially all cooks, cleaners or salespeople. People who are looked down upon. People who are rarely envied or desired. I am proud of who I am. And my music celebrates that.«

The concert by Priya Ragu is part of the »c/o pop 2022 musichubgermany« project and is funded by the Initiative Musik gemeinnützige Projektgesellschaft GmbH with project funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
